Villa, according to The Telegraph, are thought to be pushing for a £60m deal, with the report also adding that contract talks at Elland Road have stalled, while Newcastle are apparently willing to nearly 5x his wages.
Phillips is in the process of changing agents, with his future unlikely to be resolved until June as a result.
The Latest: Hutton’s comments
Hutton, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI about the emerging news of interest in Phillips and the chances of him penning new Elland Road terms.
He doesn’t think the midfielder will sign a fresh contract and said ‘Leeds fans won’t be happy with that’ and added that he totally understands why his former club, Aston Villa, are looking so sign the Leeds star.
“I can’t see it, if I’m totally honest. Leeds fans won’t be happy with that.
“But in this situation at the moment, they’re eight points outside the relegation zone. There are still teams below them with games in hand.
“I think they’ve done enough and I think they will stay up. But for Kalvin Phillips, as a footballer moving forward, he’s very capable of taking a step up.
“He’s a fully-fledged international player. If he wants to keep that spot, he needs to be playing at a high level.
“Are Aston Villa at that level at this moment in time? No, they aren’t, but that’s where they’re trying to get to.
“To get to that next stage, they have to be looking at players like Kalvin Phillips to make them better. I totally understand why they’re going for him. It’ll be interesting to see if they could get over the line.”
The Verdict: More likely to stay…
Both Phillips and Raphinha have been heavily linked with moves away from Leeds this summer, and you’d expect that club officials may not want to sell two of their best players in the same window.
Phillips looks more likely to stay after recently informing the Whites he is willing to pen a new deal in Yorkshire. A fresh contract is way overdue for the central midfielder, who is now an England regular and an established Premier League player.
He is on just £25,000-a-week at Leeds, with his last deal coming back in 2019 when the Whites were in the Championship. Therefore, if Leeds can come close to eye-catching contact offers he may receive from Villa, Newcastle and West Ham, you’d like to think he would be open to staying at his boyhood club.
