The Danish defender has been a regular for Southampton under Hassenhutl but the potential absence of his key man may spark a significant overhaul.
The Austrian manager has been using a defensive line with three centre backs flanked by wing backs in recent weeks but the injury to Vestergaard has many anticipating a switch from the Saints boss.
Hasenhuttl used a four at the back system at RB Leipzig during his tenure in the Bundesliga and it worked to great effect, but due to the personnel he has to work with at St Mary’s he has largely opted for a more rigid defensive structure.
A few Southampton fans are expecting Jan Bednarek to line up alongside Maya Yoshida at centre-back with the 4-2-2-2 formation being touted by many as the system the south coast club will use at St James’ Park on Saturday.
